A blog is time consuming?
This weekend I've been off busy with some of my own work.
I also tried a new technique taught in a class at "My Favorite Yarn Shop", Warrenton,VA. (Needle Sculpting)
Was fun, but long day....
New posts will have to wait till Monday morning.

Meet my newest creation.

Here are two examples of a 7th grade assignment that centered on design and pattern.

The red project is by Courtney and the turquoise project is by John.

Each 7th grade student had to design 10 various 'two inch' squares. One square was chosen to duplicate 10 to 12 times. They then used the squares to complete a final design or pattern.

Here are two examples of my 8th grade students' tempera batik. I asked my students to create a composition where the flowers touched at least 3 of the 4 sides of our paper.

I had fresh flowers in the room for the students to view as they created their compositions.

Paintings are 12X18 inches.

Left side painting completed by Logan , painting on the right side completed by Shaunte

It had been years since I presented this technique and was quite pleased with the results.

Here is another example from the apple assignment.

By Melanie - 8th grade

Melanie does not like apples but wanted to participate so chose to cut her apple rather than bite it. 'When there is a will there is a way'.

Here is a fun assignment, students enjoy it because they get to eat the apple. ;-) We discuss negative and positive space and how an artist can show negative and postive objects in their drawings. This was a two day assignment. Due to time constraints students worked the first day on drawing the apple whole. The following day we divided our paper into squares by folding the paper. Students then take a bite of the apple and draw what they see, using the first square. After completing the new drawing they are allowed a few more bites and will then draw the apple again in the next square. Our class periods are 50 minutes long so we have to work quickly (about 8-9 minutes per square). (The original is in color.)

Whoops, photo's of student art work will begin to be posted later this week.

Ms.H is participating in an internet class to learn about blogs. This is her first attempt to create a blog.
This is a forum for Ms.H to show off her student's art work and hopefully some of them posting their views and critiques of other classmates art work.
If you like something you see feel free to post comments, ask questions about the steps of lessons and media used. All work will be from 6th ,7th and 8th grade students from Warrenton Middle School, Warrenton, VA.
